Open Water

Presenting "Open Water", a wall art inspired by all the amazing beaches and oceans around the world!

To capture and recreate the calming sensation brought about by the ocean, we incorporated multiple shades of blue (metallic blue, medium blue, and even neon blue) and set it against a white background to create the look of a nautical map of open waters and the continents.  Hand-applied gold leaf lines, real salt crystals, handmade glitter and sparkling crushed glass are added to provide the glittering effect of the sun hitting the waters!  To make this piece both a statement piece and a functional art, we also embedded authentic blue aventurine crystals, the very same crystals used by luxury watch companies for their watch dials when making high horology timepieces.  Blue aventurine is also said to be a very positive stone and believed by some cultures to have great properties such as: calming and balancing the emotions, promoting tranquillity, stimulating the metabolism, lowering cholesterol and balancing blood pressure.

Our original inspiration for this piece was Port Lockroy, Antarctica, a bay forming a natural harbour on the north-western shore of Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Antarctic base with the same name, situated on Goudier Island in this bay, includes the most southerly operational post office in the world. "Open Waters" first debuted at Art San Diego and was one of the most conversation-induced and relatable pieces as many art collectors and afficionados saw their own version of their beaches in this piece.
